    Temporary Residency

An exhibition of two Canadian artists

    Johannes Zits & Edward Pien

Temporary Residency is a week-long exhibition by two Canadian artists Johannes Zits and Edward Pien. They will feature some two hundred of their drawings completed during their four months` stay in Taiwan.

This is Edward Pien`s first trip back to Taiwan since emigrating to Canada with his family 28 years ago, Frequently, this artist incorporates hundreds of drawings in his installations to make visually engaging works which often include elements of black humour. This exhibition is his response to Taiwan`s cultures. He has taken a year off from teaching at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver to do research for upcoming solo exhibitions in Toronto, Windsor and Montreal,Canada. The drawings at The New Paradise represent apart of this research.

Johannes Zits, a Holland-born artist,is here for the first time. A painter for over 15years,his work has been widely exhibited across Canada. His highly animated and gestural style of brushstrokes incorporates the medium of Chinese ink-brush painting with an Abstract Expressionist influence. While in Taiwan he is applying these techniques to continue his exploration of human relationships and the boundries between the public and the private. His work often depicts familiar and intimate situations.

Without the generosity of Miss Jun T. Lai, who lent her studio to these artists to provide them workspace, and the New Paradise Gallery, whose inaugural exhibition is scheduled later this month, this exhibition would not have been possible.
